On November 9, 1938, Adolph Hitler ordered what was to become “The Night of the Broken Glass.” On that night more than a thousand synagogues had their windows smashed and then they were burned, windows of Jewish owned businesses and homes were smashed, Jews were rounded up and destined for concentration camps, and some 400 were murdered.
The West did nothing in response.
Again and again, Hitler introduced draconian measures against the Jews in Poland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, as well as in Germany. And again and again, the West did nothing in response.
Hitler was testing the West to see whether his pogroms could go on and go deeper and he could become the dominant figure in Europe and perhaps even the world. And there was no response from the West. So began the war that ended the lives of millions of people, both military and civilian.
Now, we stand on the brink of an even more devastating war, the war against Islamic terrorism that threatens to engulf the world and create an incredible and systematic devastation of what most of us hold dear. In Africa, Europe, the Malay Archipelago, not even to mention the Middle East, the hordes of jihadists strike with brute force in large groups and as individuals. And so even here in the United States. Remember 9/11 and the Boston Marathon. Genocide in Africa has reached epic proportions. The slaughter of innocent civilians, including small children, seems to be the order of the day.
The West is doing nothing in response.
The only democracy in the Middle East, Israel, is standing by itself against threats and real destruction on all its borders. And the West is doing nothing. Well, that’s not quite right. America is doing something. America is joining the aggressors in demanding Israel gut its country.
We talk a good talk about “having Israel’s back” when it comes to their need to defend themselves, but what we really mean is that we are behind them…way, way behind them.
And now, Iran and communist North Korea are on the edge of developing a nuclear WMD that–to use a favorite expression of our late adversary Saddam Hussein–will be the Mother of all WMDs.
Iran and North Korea are testing us. Al Qaeda is testing us. Our former trade and defense partners, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and others are testing us. We have let so many of our friends down that we find ourselves nearly alone. I was raised to believe that a man’s word was his bond. I still believe it, and I only wish that we could go back to those days when it was true, but I think it is too late.
Hitler tested us and for a long time, we failed. It took Pearl Harbor to wake us up. I had hoped that 9/11/2001 had awakened us, but I fear not.
We are again failing Hitler’s critical test — only this time we face a more aggressive, better financed, more determined, and more illusive foe.
