It’s a continual topic of conversation among many politically active conservative Christians. Our African-American brothers and sisters cancelling out our votes with their own. Many of us social conservatives vote Republican because often times they most closely associate with our own personal views of morality and social justice. Our African-American brothers and sisters stand with us in the fight on abortion, and the battles against the forced acceptance of gay marriage as a legal and social norm. In fact, on many important key social issues we conservative Republicans agree with the majority of African-American voters… and yet we often cast conflicting ballots.
Conservatives understand political buyer’s remorse. Every few elections we get a big ol’ dose of buyer’s remorse. They are “big” names like John McCain, Charlie Crist, Arlen Specter, Lindsey Graham, Bob Dole, Mitt Romney and dare I say Chris Christie? There are lesser lights like Jeff Flake, Kelly Ayotte, Saxby Chambliss and so many others. They usually come with big promise and a whole lot of rhetoric but then they win their election and become squishy RINO’s.
So we get buyer’s remorse too…
But what I can’t understand is how black Christians can get buyer’s remorse when the people they vote for are so clearly opposed to their personal views?
Bishop Larry Trotter, of Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago, is vowing that there will be consequences for those lawmakers who support same sex marriage.
“I think that they will feel the crunch. I think that they cannot take for granted that they can come to the church; and get the church’s sanction, and votes, and signatures; and then go to Springfield, and don’t speak what the people want them to speak. And so now, if that’s how we have to be heard, we will be heard,” Trotter said.
Sadly, Bishop Trotter, they won’t feel any crunch. They can take you for granted, and they will continue to take you for granted. Why would liberal Democrats ever support the socially conservative values and causes that you ask them to? Do you think that they are worried you might support someone else? Who will you vote for? Will you vote for the Republican candidate? Will you convince all of Chicago’s black Christians to vote Republican? I don’t think so.
Conservatives are beginning to understand that the Republican Party does not “truly” represent our values, so we’ve started supporting Tea Party candidates. The GOP establishment has begun turning against us conservatives, calling us names and attacking our views as “fringe.”
Will socially conservative African-Americans begin doing the same? Imagine what we could accomplish together if African-American social conservatives began supporting socially conservative candidates who stuck to their guns the way men like Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Justin Amash, Rand Paul, Thomas Massie and Paul Broun do?
Look at what the partnership did in California – social conservatives of every stripe voted for Proposition 8 constitutionally banning same-sex marriage. Which forced liberals to show their true fascist colors and force gay marriage onto the state using activist judges and totalitarian politicians. The courts and the politicians worked together to destroy the rights of Californians… and it was all the liberals doing.
However, there are huge differences between California and the rest of the United States. If socially conservative blacks aligned themselves with socially conservative whites, despite their other political differences – we could change our nation in a few short years.
So. Fellow social conservatives, who wants to stop feeling buyer’s remorse?
