With apologies to Obamacare which will likely one day prove to be the most destructive thing “accomplished” by the Obama administration, I would posit that today Syria stands as the greatest monument to President Obama’s impotence.
Syria, a place that the majority of Americans would be unable to find on a map, shines as a blinding reminder that the Obama administration lacks wisdom, fortitude, or the ability to understand the possible repercussions of failed policy.
How could this happen?
It’s simple really. First, we have no business being involved in a civil war half way around the world in a nation that is neither friendly towards us nor overtly dangerous. Syria is no different from a dozen other brink of war nations in the Islamic world, and we cannot be expected to involve ourselves in each and every one of their disputes. Secondly, the Syrian government already had the support of a couple of major geo-political players (the Russians and the Chinese), and if we were going to oppose them it would take a major show of force – not some token rhetoric and aid. Thirdly, and probably the most important reason for Obama’s failure, while the government of Syria is evil, their opposition is no better.
This third truth is continuing to be reinforced as new reports show that Syria has the largest population of Al-Qaeda terrorists in the world. (And guess which side they’re on – ours.) That’s right, the Obama administration sided with the largest terrorist army in the world. I don’t care how bad the Syrian government is – they can’t be worse than a nation ruled by al-Qaeda.
Syria has become al Qaeda’s largest safe haven, with more than 10,000 fighters who outnumber the terrorist network’s core organization in Pakistan and its affiliates in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula… In addition, the terrorists are consolidating their hold in Syria — generating revenue by selling oil confiscated from wells in the eastern part of the country, setting up Islamic courts and other means of government, and enforcing borders with neighboring countries, the U.S. ambassador to Syria said Thursday… “We have let this be a safe haven, and that is why they are going there…” Al Qaeda fighters are bringing heavy weaponry from Syria into Iraq and have become an increasing threat in the past eight months… “It is a fact now that al Qaeda has a presence in western Iraq, and it has a presence in terms of camps and training facilities and staging areas that the Iraqi forces are unable to target effectively,” the official said.
The Obama administration has failed so miserably in Syria that they’ve done the impossible and made a situation that was nominally negative for the United States into a disaster. Team Obama has proven its talent for one thing, and one thing only… making our country (and the world) a less safe place. Congrats.
