Liberal journalist and pundit Peter Beinart was a guest on CNN in the aftermath of the most recent Democrat presidential debate. He had some particularly bad news for the liberal candidates, which he offered in the hopes for democrat preservation and success. After watching the debate, he gave a stingingly harsh critique of the candidates’ performance when it came to discussing the subject of Islamic terrorism.
In fact, Beinart seems to worry that his could be the defining issue in the coming election, and that since the GOP has a clear message on terrorism, it could ultimately sink the Democrat hopes for the White House.
“I say this as a liberal, I would be concerned as a Democrat about the entire terrorism part of this debate. The Republican line, whatever you think about it, is very clear. It’s that we left Iraq, the terrorists filled a vacuum, we retreated from the world, now they are going after us. I would be darned to listen to all three of those candidates to discern a clear Democratic line of how you’re actually going to fight terrorism. They were very vague, very non-specific, and I think they have a lot of work to do.
If terrorism is going to be a major, major issues in this election, the polls show people trust Republicans on it, they’re going to have to do better.”
Republican commentator S.E. Cupp was similarly concerned about the poor performance from the candidates in the terrorism section of the debate. Her concern though came more from a position of worrying about what might come to pass if a Democrat were to win the White House in 2016.
“There was a good 5-8 minute section where the three of them sort of parsed words over words. What they would call the threat. Was it “radical jihadism”? Was it “Islamic extremism”? No one really came out and… I think if you’re a voter at home, this is very frightening. To see three Democrats not even sure what to call it – If you’re just sitting at home, you want someone up there who’s presidential, who’s not afraid to say the unpopular thing and is going to be tougher on terrorism than they are afraid of political correctness.”
The bottom line is that the Democrat Party is terrible on terrorism because they are bad with absolutes. The Muslim terrorists are evil incarnate, and the only way to deal with them is through the use of force – whether militarily, economically or politically. Democrats don’t understand this and instead have chosen to deal with the terrorists as if they are perfectly reasonable political operatives who if reasoned with, will change their ways…
Sadly, we don’t live in a Fairy Tale and the bad guys in our story won’t listen to reason.
