Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have a lot in common. A lot. However, for a conservative observer like myself, the one thing that jumps out at me is the stunning inability either of them have for ever taking responsibility for a failure. I mean, these two people have failed at more things over the last decade than most people will ever fail at over the course of their entire life. However, somehow, neither Obama nor Clinton has ever been responsible for any of their failures! Ever.
Just think on it for a minute… when is the last time that either of these two very important, very powerful LEADERS took responsibility for something that went wrong on their watch? I couldn’t think of one. Not one. In fact even when Clinton pretends that she is taking responsibility, like when she “apologized” for the email scandal, she follows it up by blaming Americans for misunderstanding the scandal.
“At the end of the day I am sorry that this has been confusing to people,” Clinton said on MSNBC. Yea, she’s sorry you folks just can’t seem to get what’s going on here.
President Obama usually blames Republicans in Congress (though he’s also blamed the media for a few of his problems), and Hillary Clinton has ALWAYS blamed conservatives for her failures. (Remember the “vast right-wing conspiracy” against her family?) Clinton has recently added a few new people to blame, though – now she includes the media (for shamelessly doing their job and investigating the email server scandal) and her staff (for not doing their jobs well enough).
It’s this second one that we’re hearing more about now that a Politico story has broken, detailing how frustrated Clinton has become with her campaign staff’s inability to spin the email story out of the news.
Clinton was unmistakably unhappy.
“I am having two problems,” she bluntly told the supporter at a social event. “On the one hand, I feel like I’m rolling out a lot of substantive programs on issues that people care about. We’re getting one day’s news coverage. But there’s nothing larger knitting it together. We’re not breaking through. … And my team needs to get their act together on the email response.”
Clinton’s frustration with her own campaign staff was striking. So was her refusal for much of the year to characterize the escalating email controversy as anything other than a failure of communications, messaging or the vast right-wing-and-media conspiracy. Both complaints were consistent with what other campaign advisers told us in dozens of interviews for this story—except some of them laid equal blame on the candidate herself.
Indeed, from the minute news of Clinton’s secret personal email server broke this past March, she had reacted by lashing out at her enemies—and repeatedly demanding of her inner circle, “How do we get past this?” Neither the campaign nor the candidate have definitively answered that question, and the months of indecision, uncertainty and mounting legal threat have left Clinton, for the second time in her two presidential campaigns, a deeply vulnerable front-runner.
From the start, the email controversy—and her campaign’s handling of it—has been an exercise in exasperation, according to people involved in the effort.
This simply serves to reinforce my impression that Clinton (like Obama) is simply incapable of ever taking responsibility for failure. Obama hasn’t done it with the many failures of his administration – remember, he learns about all of his team’s failures through the media and he is always upset about them – and Clinton can’t do it either.
Whatever happened to the old American truism that “The Buck Stops Here”?
It was President Harry Truman who kept the placard with the statement on his desk, reminding everyone that when something goes wrong… it’s the boss who should take the blame.
It’s not Clinton’s staff’s fault that she had the poor judgment to set up a private server using a small-time operation that had little to no security. It’s not her campaign staff’s fault that her first response when the scandal broke was to lie, spin, and distort what had really happened. It’s not her staff’s fault that when the media asked her easy, straight to the point questions she chose to do anything except tell the truth.
It’s her fault. Hers alone.
Grow up, Mrs. Clinton. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming your subordinates for your mistakes.
