On Monday President Obama spoke to the 70th United Nations General Assembly and said many things that we could parse and refute.
One of his biggest distortions of reality came while discussing ISIS (or ISIL) in particular, and Islam in general. President Obama said that to stop terrorism we have to reject non-Muslim ignorance “that equates Islam with terror.”
“We know that ISIL, which emerged out of the chaos of Iraq and Syria, depends on perpetual war to survive. But we also know that they gain adherence because of a poisonous ideology.
So part of our job, together, is to work to reject such extremism that infects too many of our young people. Part of that effort must be a continued rejection by Muslims of those who distort Islam to preach intolerance and promote violence, and it must also involve a rejection by non-Muslims of the ignorance that equates Islam with terror.”
I’m sorry, but I wonder if the President has ever stopped to wonder why it is that everyone equates Islam with terror? Far fewer Catholics have molested little boys, but the Pope is constantly having to apologize for the very well reported on scandals of such behavior.
The fact is that these generalities grow out of a necessary reality. Many of us equate Islam with terror because there have been thousands of terrorist acts by thousands of different Muslim individuals in the world over the last couple of decades. (Here’s a list of DOZENS of Muslim attacks in America from just the last 45 years.)
What the President fails to realize is that the entire history of Islam has been one continuous violent physical confrontation with the world. From Mohammed’s assault on Mecca to ISIS’ war in Syria and Iraq, there has never been a moment where Islam was not violently forcing itself on some corner of our planet.
We equate Islam with terror because the two are most assuredly linked, and it is not we who are ignorant, Mr. President… it is you who are living in ignorance.
