Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) must be fuming. The possible cracks within a crumbling Democrat Party showed themselves clearly this past weekend when presidential candidate Martin O’Malley (D-MD) condemned Wasserman Schultz and the DNC for ‘rigging’ the presidential debates for Hillary Clinton!
“Four debates. Four debates? Four debates, and four debates only we are told, not asked before the voters in our earliest states make their decision. This is totally unprecedented in our party history. This sort of rigged process this has never been attempted before.
Who’s decree is this exactly? Where did it come from? To what end? For what purpose? What national or party interest does this decree does this serve? How does this tell the story of the last eight years of Democratic progress? How does this promote our Democratic ideas for making wages go up and household incomes go up again, instead of down?
How does this help us make our case to the American people? One debate in Iowa? That’s it? One debate in New Hampshire? That’s all we can afford? And, get this, the New Hampshire debate is cynically wedged into the high-point holiday shopping season. So, as few people watch it as possible.
We are the Democratic Party, not the Undemocratic Party. If we are to debate debates, the topic should be how many, not how few.”
What made this situation awesome was that as soon as O’Malley was finished with his speech he handed the podium off to the DNC Chairwoman, and author of the debate schedule, Debbie Wasserman Schultz! As you can imagine, this quick meeting after such harsh words from O’Malley made for a very awkward moment.
Awesome. I love the disgust, rage and disdain in Wasserman Schultz’s eyes, and the equally dismissive grin on O’Malley’s face as the two shake hands before he leaves the stage! What a perfect moment.
Later Wasserman Schultz proved just how “classy” she was by telling people that she was classy.
“I just said thank you. I have more class than that. I shook his hand and went to the podium.”
Perhaps the classy move would have been to pretend the entire thing just didn’t happen, Debbie? Is it classy to tell people that you are classy even after you made no attempt to cover your disgust for one of your party’s candidates for President? It makes it seem as if the party chairwoman may be biased against one candidate and possibly biased towards another one… which is exactly what O’Malley was complaining about to begin with. Instead of diffusing the situation, Wasserman-Schultz simply confirmed everything that O’Malley was implying.
Here’s the full video of O’Malley’s speech.
