Just a couple of days ago on the Hugh Hewitt radio show Donald Trump said that shutting down the government in an effort to defund Planned Parenthood would be well worth the effort. He was the first Republican presidential candidate to say it, and he won’t be the last. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) recently made the same argument saying that, “we should use every and any procedural tool available to defund Planned Parenthood.”
I, for one, am in total agreement.
The problem is that for the vast majority of Republicans, government shutdown should never be an option. It’s not just Republicans either; Americans in general take a dim view of government shutdowns. Our political leaders therefore run screaming from any prospect of shutdown worried that it might affect their poll numbers. It’s actually kind of sad, but it’s also why I so appreciate Ted Cruz’s fidelity to our beliefs.
Senator Cruz told reporters on Monday that he believes “we should use every and any procedural tool available to defund Planned Parenthood.”
When reporters asked if a shutdown was worth the $528 Million that Planned Parenthood gets from the government, Cruz rightly shifted the focus off of the GOP and towards Democrats.
“I think that is an excellent question for you to ask every Democrat, if they’re willing to try to shut down the government in order to force continued taxpayer funding for an organization that has now been caught on film apparently repeatedly admitting to multiple felonies in buying and selling body parts in direct contravention of federal criminal law.”
Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) agreed with Cruz that any shutdown would not be the GOP’s fault, but the fault of the Democrat Party.
“First of all, I don’t know how anyone can continue to justify funding an organization that’s been exposed the way it has. I don’t think you need to shut down the government to do that. I think the question you should be asking is of the Democrats: Are you willing to shut down the government in order to defend Planned Parenthood as opposed to us being asked that way?”
Senator Paul was even more focused when he argued that it would be President Obama pushing for a shutdown simply because he wants Planned Parenthood to get our tax dollars.
“I support any legislation that will defund Planned Parenthood. But I don’t think you start out with your objective to shut down government. I mean, if President Obama wants to shut down government because he doesn’t get funds for Planned Parenthood, that would be President Obama’s determination to shut down government.”
It continues to rankle my nerves when the media implies that every government shutdown is the GOP’s fault. When the Democrats were in the majority, GOP recalcitrance was the cause of government shutdowns. Now that the GOP is in majority the problem isn’t that Democrats are standing in the way and being obstinate, it’s that Republicans are being too hardline in their demands! It’s madness – both parties should be held to the same standards.
Now that the GOP is in the majority they have the right (and the mandate from the people) to craft policy and to decide how our budget will be spent. The Democrats do have a say in this, but because of the last election they only get a “minority” voice in the matter. If the GOP wishes to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, then they can do that, and if the Democrats want to shut down the government to save PP’s funding, they can do so.
But the media should report it as a Democrat effort to shut down the government.
I hope the GOP has the spine to move forward with OUR budget, cutting the funding from PP and forcing the Democrats to decide on shutting the government down or moving forward.
