Hey fellow conservative, how’s this for some no-nonsense talk on immigration?
Well, in my view, we also have to fix the illegal immigration system, which has been broken for about 25 years now. No one’s — everyone talks about comprehensive solutions but nobody starts with the basics. My own view is, if you have come here illegally and stayed here illegally, that you don’t get a path to citizenship.
Wow! This comment came not from Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio or Scott Walker, but from dark horse candidate Carly Fiorina. Fiorina has been firing up the GOP crowds coast to coast over the last few months and positions like this are why. She is willing to say the logical and honest things that GOP candidates should be saying. She goes further to say that “legal status” may be possible, but it is simply immoral to give law-breaking illegal immigrants a free pass while law abiding legal immigrants wait as many as 10 years to get here legally!
Fiorina made these comments on MSNBC’s Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Monday, and I’d be willing to bet they’ll be well received in the conservative corners of the Internet.
Watch for the immigration bit, but stay for the entire interview; it’s well worth your time. Carly Fiorina is a force to be reckoned with.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: What’s your view on immigration?
CARLY FIORINA: Well, I think we have to do some really basic things first. People have lost faith in government. That’s why 82 percent of the American people now think we have a professional political class that cares more about its power, privilege, and position than doing the people’s work. And let’s start with the fact that we’ve never secured the border — under either Republicans or Democrats. This isn’t rocket science.
SCARBOROUGH: So start by securing the border.
FIORINA: Yes. We absolutely have to do that.
SCARBOROUGH: Is there a pathway to citizenship?
FIORINA: Well, in my view, we also have to fix the legal immigration system, which has been broken for about 25 years now. No one’s — everyone talks about comprehensive solutions but nobody starts with the basics. My own view is, if you have come here illegally and stayed here illegally, that you don’t get a path to citizenship. Perhaps legal status —
SCARBOROUGH: What about legalized status?
FIORINA: Well, I think legal status is a possibility, for sure. I think their children maybe can become citizens. But my own view is it isn’t fair to say to people who have played by the rules — and it takes a long time to play about it rules — that, you know, it just doesn’t matter.
SCARBOROUGH: Yes. That – that —
BRZEZINSKI: So the last time you were on, I challenged you and your credentials as they pertain to being able to attack Hillary Clinton and we talked about that. I’m going to ask it a different way now. What do you draw from your experience and credentials that you think would make you an effective president?
FIORINA: Well, I understand the economy. I understand how the world works and who’s in it. I know more world leaders on the stage today than anyone running, with the possible exception of Hillary Clinton. Although I didn’t do photo ops with them; I had private meetings with them.
I understand bureaucracies and what it takes to move them. Because our government is one giant, bloated, unaccountable, corrupt, inept bureaucracy now. I understand technology. I understand that guarding a server with Secret Service agents doesn’t keep it from being hacked, for example. And I understand executive leadership, which is making a tough call in a tough time for which you’re prepared to be held accountable.
I think those things I just named are what’s required to do the job of President of the United States now.
