CNN’s Don Lemon is a popular personality on their daily TV programming. While he is African-American and homosexual, Lemon can often be counted on to express opinions that run counter to liberal orthodoxy, and for that he is generally respected on both sides of the political aisle – but not by Mike Tyson.
This past week he appeared as a guest on a radio show and gave a bit of a monologue decrying our culture’s current politically correct state. He pointed to complaints by comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Colin Quinn and noted that there has been a general chilling effect on debate in our nation because of political correctness. He then went a step farther and blamed liberals and progressives for the bulk of the problem, because they are the group who is most intolerant of any dissenting opinions!
After this, I think Don Lemon may have more fans among conservatives than ever before.
“We have to allow people leeway to make mistakes in conversations without calling them racists [and] bigots.”
“After almost 25 years in the news business, you know who is the most easily offended and the least tolerant: Liberals and progressive – because many of them don’t really want to hear anyone else’s opinion but their own. Here’s a tip, if you only agree with people who hold your same political affiliation or who are of your particular race, gender or ethnicity, you are part of the political correctness run amuck problem. You are actually thwarting progress instead of advancing.”
I totally agree with almost every word out of Lemon’s mouth in the first 6 minutes of this interview. One of the reasons our nation is among the greatest to ever populate this planet is because of our freedom to dissent from popular opinion. Free speech at its heart is about ensuring that the minority will always have the right to disagree VOCALLY with the majority – on any subject they wish. ANY SUBJECT, no matter how taboo or how sacred.
The modern liberal has forgotten what it’s like to be the minority opinion. They’ve forgotten what it’s like to NEED free speech, and now they want to strip that right from conservatives and from Christians, and they are accomplishing this by using the thin veil of political correctness. We need more liberals like Don Lemon, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher and others to protest the creeping onslaught of the PC movement… or we stand little chance of saving the First Amendment. I’m not sure we vocal minority of conservatives, who are the ones with the unpopular opinions, are loud enough or influential enough to stop the tide of politically correct fascism without the help of more influential liberals.
We need them, and that terrifies me.
