Michelle Obama for President? The idea of the current first lady running for president is not as farfetched as it seems. During an appearance on the MSNBC program “Now with Alex Wagner,” Columbia University Professor Dorian Warren casually threw out the suggestion, “I think we should draft Michelle Obama to run.” Warren continued “Forget running for the Senate like Hillary did, let’s draft the first lady right now. She is equally as talented and smart as her husband. I think she would make a great president.” Another first lady with a law degree from an Ivy League institution running for public office? Where have we heard this one before?
Michelle Obama as President. The idea is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Consider this, in the 2008 primary Hillary Clinton won 20 primaries, but lost 16, garnering approximately 50% of the female vote. At the time Hillary’s performance with female voters was viewed as disappointing. She received more support from older female voters vs. younger female voters. The theory at the time was that Hillary did well with older female voters because they liked the idea of electing the first female president. Younger female voters were less motivated to vote for a candidate just because she was a woman. Michelle Obama, who is 51 years old, has a greater appeal with women of all ages vs. Hillary, who was 59 in 2008. Secondly Michelle Obama has another obvious advantage. She can bring in the black vote. Her husband President Barack Obama brought in 93% of the black vote in 2012 and 95% of the black vote in 2008. She will also probably fare well with the Hispanic vote. After all, her husband received 71% of the Hispanic vote in 2012.
Yes, Michelle Obama could probably run for President. There are many individuals in the country who think she is intelligent, socially conscious and cool. Most first ladies have a social cause. Her chosen cause is healthy eating and physical fitness. Her “just move program” appears to enjoy some popularity. Her “school lunch program”, not so much. According to Government Accountability Office audit of Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act Nutrition standards, 48 out of 50 states had difficulty complying with the act requirements. At least 1 million students were throwing out their lunches, complaining about the food’s taste. Students even staged boycotts. Many students just don’t think that her program provides enough food. Students responded to the first lady’s platform with a video of them singing “We are hungry” with physical images of students fainting.
All right, a Michelle Obama presidency is possible. It is also definitely scary. Remember this is the woman who said on the campaign trail that this is the first time in her adult life that she is proud of her country. Hillary Clinton, for all of her failings from Watergate to email gate, has never made comments that were unpatriotic. We can’t say the same for the current first lady. Furthermore, she obviously espouses the same anti-colonialism viewpoint as her husband. She wants to fundamentally transform America into a place of shared, not earned prosperity. No doubt she also subscribes to the same glorification of the victim and Robin Hood economics of her husband.
They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Michelle Obama, like Hillary, would go into a presidential campaign with the advantage of having spent eight years in the White House and knowing the inner workings of Washington politics. She also enjoys a high a level of popularity, a popularity which is likely to grow much higher than that of Hillary. But it is her likeability that makes her more dangerous. People are too mesmerized by the “smart, hip, attractive” woman in the White House to see that she has an unparalleled arrogance and a dangerous socialist view of the world. Yes, Michelle Obama could very well become President. And we will only have ourselves to blame.
