Several months ago our nation was shaken by the discovery of a “House of Horrors” in a small Cleveland neighborhood. Three young women had been held captive as prisoners by a monster by the name of Ariel Castro. They suffered at his hands for years before one of the young women was able to escape the house and alert the world to their location. The pain and anguish inflicted on these poor women was physical, emotional, and mental… and in the end the monster proved to be more coward than man.
Ariel Castro, kidnapper, sexual deviant, rapist, child molester, abuser, and murderer was found dead Tuesday night. Castro hanged himself with a bed sheet while being detained at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. Prison staff tried to revive him but could not. He was pronounced dead on September 3 at 10:52pm. Ever the coward, the monster could not stomach having to live the rest of his life in a prison and so in his final act, he committed yet another crime and denied the world the justice we deserve for his cruel and violent crimes.
In the end I hope that his death, following his conviction for kidnapping, rape, and murder will allow the young women whose lives he tried to destroy to close this chapter of their lives. These beautiful and strong survivors have so much life left to live and to give to our national community – hopefully the passing of Castro can simply be a footnote on the road of their lives.
The Cuyahoga County prosecutor said it best, “These degenerate molesters are cowards… This man couldn’t take, for even a month, a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade.”
I take no joy in the death of another human being, but the world is a safer, slightly less disgusting place with Ariel Castro gone from this place. We feel sorrow for his family for the pain that they may be feeling, but are relieved that he no longer poses any danger to the rest of our children.
