ISIS Now Running “Education Camps” to Indoctrinate Children

ISIS continues to leak videos to the world showing their brutality and their commitment to their cause.

The latest video is split into two distinct portions – one showing Kurdish rebels who have fought against ISIS, locked in cages and being paraded down the streets of a Syrian city. The men are dressed in the orange jumpsuits that ISIS has made famous, and are each locked in individual cages, which harkens back to the execution of the Jordanian pilot who was burned alive. The purpose of this portion of the video is likely a simple effort at psychological warfare. If ISIS can cow the Kurdish fighters into laying down their arms, then one of their toughest obstacles will be eliminated.

The other portion of the video is even more chilling (which seems impossible).

ISIS spent time showing a large group of children being trained to fight as Islamist soldiers. The video proves that the United Nations was right in condemning ISIS for establishing “training camps to recruit children into armed roles under the guise of education.”

The report also said “At the camps, the children recruited received weapons training and religious education. The existence of such camps seems to indicate that ISIS systematically provides weapons training for children. Subsequently, they were deployed in active combat during military operations, including suicide-bombing missions.”

The video was shot at a training center in Raqqa, Syria. ISIS calls the camp “the Al Farouk Institute for Cubs.” Cute, right? This is just the outgrowth of what ISIS has been saying since their inception. They call themselves the Islamic State; they say they have established a caliphate under the leadership of Abu Bark al-Baghdadi. A caliphate is just a fancy word for state, or country.

If you watched the VICE video series that was produced a few months back explaining everything you never wanted to know about ISIS, they thoroughly discussed their desire to develop a full-fledged bureaucracy… and it seems that a public education system is just another rung on that ladder.

ISIS Kids

“If you believe the ISIS caliphate is the best place to be and Allah commands you to go there, you’d want your family there, too,” said Ryan Mauro, a national security analyst for the Clarion Project, a New York-based research institute that tracks global terrorism. “For ISIS supporters, this is like signing your kid up for the best private school.”

The video is designed to send a message that ISIS is here to stay, Mauro added.

“ISIS is emphasizing its child recruits because it obviously makes for good footage but also to emphasize this is a generational struggle,” Mauro said. “You can kill off the current leaders and fighters, but their kids will fight on. It makes it harder to celebrate ISIS’ losses if you know their manpower will be replenished with brainwashed children.”

Author and former radical Islamist Maajid Nawaz told Fox & Friends Monday the video of the jihadi cubs is disturbing and underscores the militant organization’s long-range objective.

“I think this is shocking for everyone who sees such images,” he said. “Islamic State from the beginning has been saying that they’re planning not just to build a state but a new generation of jihadists who have been raised on their diet of blood and violence.”

The point should be clear. ISIS is making a case for permanence. Yes, they are fighting wars in Iraq and Syria, but they are also establishing a system of law, courts, governance, bureaucracy and military training. They obviously believe that the deeper they can entrench themselves into the everyday lives of the entire community, the more difficult it will be to ever root them out… and they are right. ISIS must be stopped soon, or we may reach a point where they are so deeply embedded in the local culture that it will be impossible to ever truly be rid of them.
