Yes, I know the title sounds a little stunted, but that’s actually the whole thing. Senator Ted Cruz is a popular person on the American political scene today; he is a Tea Party darling who has been roiling up the left since he became Senator from the great state of Texas. He has sided with another popular firebrand, Senator Rand Paul, on some of the most hotly debated topics in the country and has met a lot of media criticism with a smile and a shrug. For these and many other reasons, Ted Cruz has become very popular among the conservative base of the Republican Party and he could be looking to use that popularity to propel him to the White House in 2016.
However, that trip to Washington may have hit a bit of a snag over the last couple of weeks as various members of the media, the left, and some in the Republican Party have suggested that Cruz cannot hold the office of President. They cite his Canadian birth as the reason he will never be President of the United States.
While it is true that Rafael Edward Cruz (Ted to his friends) was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is actually a Canadian citizen, he is also a natural born citizen of the United States of America. His father was a Cuban immigrant who became a citizen upon arrival in the United States, thanks to American law. His mother was an American born in America. His birth in Canada came about simply because that was where his father was working 9 months into his wife’s pregnancy. Cruz meets every historical standard for “natural born citizen”, but that will likely not stop some from attacking his viability as President.
With his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, Cruz showed that he has a great sense of humor today (to go along with all of his other great qualities) when he released his birth certificate proving… that Ted Cruz was born. The release of the birth certificate doesn’t really add anything to the debate over his legitimacy to be President, because it simply proves he was born in Calgary. What it does show is that Cruz is willing to laugh about the pseudo-controversy, something that President Obama could never bring himself to do.
Folks – Ted Cruz is a “natural born citizen.” Both of his parents are American citizens (and his father was a legal resident) and the moment they birthed Cruz, so was he. Dismissing his candidacy because he was born in Canada is a ridiculous argument if you just give it a bit of thought. Would someone be disqualified if they were born while their parents were on vacation in Mexico? Or on a cruise ship in the Caribbean? Visiting a foreign embassy in New York City? Of course not…
