President Obama was in Australia Sunday, but he was dealing with brewing controversy back home. The President was forced to answer for the many comments by Jonathan Gruber that call into question the transparency of how the Obamacare law was passed, as well as the honesty of the Obama administration and their Democrat lackeys in the way they sold the bill to the American people. President Obama chose to deny the basic premise of what the many Gruber videos imply – that Democrats misled the American people to make sure Obamacare passed – and also tried to minimize Gruber’s role in the process.
“The fact that an adviser who was never on our staff expressed an opinion that I completely disagree with in terms of the voters is not a reflection on the actual process that was run,” Obama declared at a press conference here, speaking for the first time about the comments by MIT economist Jonathan Gruber.
When the president was asked whether he had intentionally misled the public in order to get the law passed, he replied: “No. I did not.”
Obama said the notion that any provisions in the bill were hidden is absurd given the intensity of news coverage of the subject when the bill was being drafted and debated in Congress.
“I would just advise every press outlet here: Pull up every clip and every story. I think it’s fair to say there was not a provision in the health care law that was not extensively debated and was fully transparent,” the president declared. “It was a tough debate.”
Gruber wasn’t just an “adviser,” he was a paid consultant who made hundreds of thousands of dollars on the project. He was the chief economist cited by the administration and other Democrat officials throughout the Obamacare debate, and it is his work that is the entire foundation of the law. Also, it is his work that Democrats used to sell Obamacare to America from an economic standpoint – you cannot oversell Jonathan Gruber’s part in the crafting of Obamacare. You just can’t.
Also, the Democrat denials of the many statements from Gruber are maddening. Much of what he said was recorded years ago and has now proven to be true. For example, in video #6 Gruber explains the “Cadillac Tax” – everything he says in the video is exactly accurate. There isn’t anything to debate, and now a few years in, we see that what he said was accurate bur what the Democrat proponents of the law said is not. How does that square with the President’s (and other Democrats’) attempts to shrug off Gruber’s comments? It doesn’t.
In the earliest video, Gruber speaks of “the tortured way” the law was written so that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) wouldn’t score Obamacare as a tax.
“This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scores the mandate as taxes the bill dies. In terms of Risk Rated Subsidies, if you get a law that makes explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money. It would not have passed.
This video speaks to President Obama’s assertion that there was a “tough debate” about Obamacare.
The truth is that saying there was a tough debate has nothing to do with the underlying problem.
See, during that “tough debate,” Democrats were using faulty numbers and wrong assumptions – meanwhile Republicans were saying that the things Democrats were asserting about the law just aren’t true.
Today, we know that the Republicans were right.
The CBO score WAS WRONG. You CAN’T keep your doctor. You CAN’T keep your insurance. Your premiums ARE RISING (unless you live in New York or Massachusetts where you already had socialized healthcare and your costs were already insane).
The point is that the debate was tough, but every time the Republicans said the Democrats were wrong… the media and Democrats said “No, we’re not.” Just because the debate was tough doesn’t mean it took place in an honest and transparent manner! It turns out that the Republicans “lost” the debate, but were actually right about everything… and that is the point of the Gruber videos. Democrats can distance themselves from him and pretend that he doesn’t speak for them… but he was there during the planning, developing and selling of Obamacare. His math is the math that was used to hold up the entire shaky structure.
Obama can obfuscate and spin all he wants . Gruber’s comments give us a view into the heart of Democrats – and that is why these videos are so important.
