Defunding Obamacare

There are many battles that happen within both political parties as they move from issue to issue, because even members of the same party cannot always agree on the best course of action all the time. We saw that in the effort to curb the NSA’s spying powers – both parties were split nearly down the middle. We are seeing it again with the defunding Obamacare effort.

Our young conservative politicians have clearly said that this issue “is a hill worth dying on”, and they have staked out their position and claim to be immovable from it. Longer tenured politicians like Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John McCain (R-AZ), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Richard Burr (R-NC), Roy Blount (R-MO) and Richard Shelby (R-AL) have all spoken out against the movement.

The argument against the effort seems to be that it will build up expectations within the base that cannot be met. Once the House passes the defunding amendment, it will die in the Senate; if by some miracle it passes the Senate, the President will not sign it into law. That will trigger a government shutdown. Many politicians are averse to allowing government shutdowns because of their perception in the media and among the voters. In short, these Republicans are against the effort to defund Obamacare because of how a government shutdown will be perceived by the public and by extension how that would effect their reelection chances.

The argument for the defunding effort is that it will drive a national conversation on the dangers embodied in the Obamacare legislation. The House will pass the measure, if the Senate does not… it’s the Democrats in the Senate who are forcing the government shutdown. That’s how Republicans should be trumpeting this measure… before the media and the left have a chance to spin it as a Republican shutdown. The truth of the matter is that it will be the Democrats shutting down government because they refuse to abide by the will of the people, which is the full repeal of Obamacare. (States Fight Obamacare, Majority Disapprove Obamacare, 77% say get rid of Individual Mandate – which would make Obamacare impossible)

defundMarco Rubio has joined the effort to defund Obamacare and has “drawn a line in the sand” on the issue.

“[T]here has to be some point at which we say, ‘Look, this is the issue where we draw the line… I mean, on this issue we’re willing to fight no matter what the consequences, politically or otherwise. If that issue is not Obamacare, I can’t understand what issue it would be. And that’s the point I tried to make — of all the issues out there, if there was one issue that we should be willing to go to the limit on, this is it. I mean, you look at the impact this thing is going to have October 1 on every aspect of our economy. There’s literally not one aspect of our economy that is not negatively affected by Obamacare. And if that’s not an issue we’re willing to fight to the end on, I’m not sure there is such an issue that we’d be will to do that on. [L]ook, I’m not attacking anyone directly… All I’m saying is that you cannot say you are against Obamacare if you are willing to vote for a law that funds it. If you’re willing to fund this thing, you can’t possibly say you’re against it.”

We at Eagle Rising are in full-throated agreement with Senators Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Representatives Tom Graves, Paul Broun, Steve Stockman and others. We must make every effort to stand against Obamacare at every turn. It is an issue that touches every other issue. Once Obamacare has become ensconced in law and action it will be practically immovable. These welfare projects once enshrined are almost impossible to get rid of — if you need proof, look at the histories of Medicare, Medicaid, and social security. Even Republicans love these social welfare programs now…

We must defund Obamacare now – call your representatives, local, state, and national, and tell them if they want your vote next election they better vote to defund Obamacare.

Together, we can win this.
