What if we have a few hundred thousand dead Ebola victims in a few months…as some doomsayers are predicting? Wouldn’t you just hate to be the lawyer/non-physician Ebola Czar taking the fall for your boss? Nice way to enter the history books our children’s children will grow up with.
Things are getting so bad/incompetent/dumb/treasonous that I see only one solution. Remember Commodus, the evil Emperor in the movie “Gladiator?” He really existed. And he outdid Nero and Caligula. The Senate did to his memory what the Egyptian priesthood did to Akhenaten, one of Egypt’s pharaohs. Akhenaten was a good guy and the priesthood hated him for it. When he was dead the priests decreed that his name and visage should be stricken from every public document and monument. The same thing was done to Commodus’s memory because he was so rotten.
The purging of the name of some ancient notable’s was no small matter. In ancient times the date was reckoned from the first year of the sovereign’s reign. The year was noted on your property deed or tax return(?) as January 4, Third Year of the Reign of Tiberius. Or the third year of the reign of Cheops or Nebuchadnezzar. When you think about it, we still do things that way modernly. That’s what Anno Domini means… the Year of Our Lord. Or, if you’re Jewish you count from the first year of Adam’s life. (I think that’s how one of my pals who always asks me what year “it really is” does the reckoning.) Knowing that the Romans and Egyptians were both big on keeping records …as noted in the Gospels when Caesar ordered a census, prompting Mary and Jesus’ step-daddy, Joseph, to return to Bethlehem to be counted. Thus, the name of both aforesaid potentates went on the face of every official document created and filed during their reigns.
Deleting the names of Akhenaten and Commodus from every official record on file in Egypt and Rome would have been an onerous task. But if the ancients were anything like modern bureaucrats (and they were), The Roman Senate and the Egyptian priests probably just appointed a Czar to organize the name purge. It would have put a lot of scribes and stone carvers to work.
I expect someone will authorize the same sort of records purge in January 2019. They’ll probably start with the Ebola Czar…if anyone is left. Then they’ll likely work their way up.
I’m just glad we don’t date our official documents from the inauguration of each President. The 2019 Name Purge would be a lot of work and really embarrassing explaining to grandchildren why Obama’s name appears anywhere.
